Crop Protection Products for Autumn Planting: How Cash Shortages Affect Purchases

The autumn campaign for Ukrainian farms is entering a phase where key constraints may not only be agronomic but also access to working capital. Against the backdrop of grain sales issues, farmers are forced to prioritize more carefully between fuel, wages, loans, sowing, and purchasing crop protection products.

For sellers and buyers of crop protection agents, this creates a more pragmatic market: decisions on herbicides, fungicides, seed treatments, and related products are increasingly made not "just in case," but tailored to specific fields, crops, and upcoming technological operations.

Factors Pressuring Crop Protection Purchases

One market indicator is the situation described by Sergey Rybalko, founder of the farm "Adelaide": due to nearly complete export stoppage of Ukrainian grain, farms have full grain storage facilities and are experiencing a shortage of funds to continue fieldwork and autumn sowing.

According to him, during harvest, farms need to attract about 20 million UAH monthly for loans, wages, and fuel. Part of the wheat had to be sold at low prices to cover immediate payments and keep machinery operational for several days.

This serves as an important indicator for the crop protection segment: even when there is a need for technology, farms may postpone or split purchases, choose minimal necessary volumes, and compare commercial terms more actively.

Which Crop Protection Categories Remain Critical

During the autumn campaign, the most sensitive positions are those essential for reliably establishing the next season’s crop. Primarily, these include products for preparing winter crops and controlling weeds at the start of vegetation.

  • Seed treatments — a fundamental element of seed protection, which farms usually cannot fully exclude from their technology without agronomic risk.
  • Herbicides — necessary for weed control, especially where fields have problematic histories or crop rotation is limited.
  • Fungicides — procurement may become more targeted, but demand will persist where disease risks are confirmed through agronomic monitoring.
  • Adjuvants and auxiliary products — may be purchased together with main products if it enhances the effectiveness of the planned treatment.

With a limited budget, farmers should not mechanically cut back on crop protection but rather review their plans based on priorities: crop, field, predecessor, soil moisture, phytosanitary condition, and the actual economic effect of each operation.

How Crop Protection Product Sellers Can Adapt Their Offerings

The current situation encourages AgroPost sellers to make their listings clearer and more practical. Buyers need to quickly understand not only the product name but also the active ingredient, formulation, application crop, packaging, available volume, and delivery conditions.

Flexibility also plays a key role. If a buyer cannot immediately fulfill the entire need, smaller batches, quick self-pickup, reservation, transparent payment terms, or tailored packages for specific technology maps may be of interest.

For sellers, this is an opportunity to focus not only on price but also on service: respond promptly to inquiries, confirm stock availability, provide documentation, and avoid mixing different products in one listing without a clear structure.

Key Recommendations for Buyers on AgroPost

  • Plan crop protection purchases based on field and crop specifics, not just a general "buy for the season" approach.
  • Verify active ingredients, application rates, packaging, expiration dates, and documentation.
  • Compare not only unit prices but also logistics, minimum order quantities, and delivery speed.
  • Do not delay critical treatments for seed dressing and initial crop protection if sowing is imminent.
  • In case of cash shortages, split purchases into mandatory and deferred ones to avoid disrupting key technological operations.

Implications for the market: In Ukraine, autumn demand for crop protection products will depend more on farm liquidity and harvest pace than on formal needs. For AgroPost, this emphasizes the importance of precise listings, transparent sales conditions, and rapid communication between suppliers and farmers.
