Crop Protection at the Start of Harvest: Changes for Buyers and Sellers of Pesticides in Ukraine

The beginning of early grain harvesting in Ukraine does not resolve crop protection issues. The pesticide market shifts focus to monitoring later crops, pest control, and precise planning of herbicide, fungicide, and insecticide residues.

Crop Protection at the Start of Harvest: Changes for Buyers and Sellers of Pesticides in Ukraine

The start of early grain harvests gradually changes the seasonal demand for crop protection products. Some fields are already transitioning from the growth phase to harvesting, but for agribusiness, this does not mean a pause in crop protection measures.

In the pesticide market in the near future, two key tasks remain: not to miss pest development on crops still in the field, and to accurately plan procurement of products for the second half of the season.

Harvests have begun, but field risks remain

In Lviv region, the harvest campaign has started with winter barley. According to operational data, 2,800 hectares have been harvested, representing 18.2% of the area of this crop, with a yield of 20,000 tons of grain at an average yield of 72.5 c/ha.

The total area for harvesting cereals and oilseeds in the region's farms amounts to 437,000 hectares, which is 10,000 hectares or 2.3% more than last year. This indicates that a significant portion of the crops will still be in the production cycle and require regular inspection.

Simultaneously, elevators in Odesa region are already accepting the first batches of winter barley for the 2026 harvest. Market participants report the grain has a bulk density of 670 g/l. This signals to producers that crop quality is influenced not only during harvesting but also through pre-harvest monitoring of diseases, weeds, and pests.

Pest monitoring — a key action for unharvested crops

An additional market signal concerns lepidopteran pests: farmers are advised to intensify crop monitoring due to their spread. For farms, this primarily involves timely diagnosis of the situation in the field rather than automatic insecticide application.

Buyers of pesticides should clarify with suppliers not only the availability of insecticides but also the application method, active ingredient, usage regulations, and waiting periods. This is especially important for fields nearing harvest or crops with strict residue requirements.

Sellers on AgroPost should clearly specify in listings the spectrum of action, formulation, packaging, stock availability, and shipping conditions. During urgent decision-making periods, buyers respond faster to offers where all information is provided without additional clarification.

What will be in demand on the pesticide market

After the start of harvest, demand for herbicides for early grains naturally weakens, but the need for products for later crops and post-harvest planning remains. Fungicides and insecticides continue to be relevant where crops are still passing critical growth phases.

  • Insecticides — for farms that monitor pests and make decisions based on field inspections.
  • Fungicides — for crops where there is still a risk of disease development before harvest or on later plantings.
  • Herbicides — for planning protection of subsequent crops and controlling weeds on fields not yet harvested.
  • Adjuvants and stickers — as supplementary products if included in the technology and permitted by the application regulations of specific products.

Practical advice for transactions on AgroPost

Buyers should verify the current registration status of products in Ukraine, compliance with the crop listed on the label, and expiration date. For large shipments, it is advisable to coordinate documents, logistics, and storage conditions in advance.

Sellers should categorize offers: herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, seed treatments, and auxiliary products. This makes listings easier to find through search, and buyers can compare prices and availability more efficiently.

What this means for the market: the start of harvest does not halt the pesticide season but shifts its focus. Ukrainian farmers need to prioritize monitoring unharvested crops, cautious application of products before harvest, and quick access to verified offers in the crop protection market.
