Crop Protection in Ukraine: How Harvest Logistics Affects Demand and Purchases of Pesticides

The plant protection market in Ukraine is entering a period when purchasing decisions for pesticides increasingly depend not only on phytosanitary conditions in the field but also on the liquidity of agricultural enterprises.

Due to complications in exporting agricultural products, farmers may face funding shortages for autumn fieldwork and spring sowing. For sellers and buyers on AgroPost, this means a greater emphasis on flexible supply terms, regional availability of products, and clear seasonal demand planning.

Harvest Logistics Presses on Farmers’ Working Capital

Ukraine is exploring opportunities to utilize alternative export routes more actively, including land routes and ports in neighboring countries. The reason is the deterioration of maritime logistics and risks to port infrastructure.

For farms, this is important not only from the perspective of grain sales. When harvest realization slows down or becomes more expensive, farmers are more cautious in allocating budgets for seeds, fertilizers, fuel, and plant protection products.

The government is also discussing support for farmers through working capital and expanding credit programs. This signals to the pesticide market: demand may remain, but buyers will more often seek deferred payments, smaller batches, or local availability without long waiting times.

Corn and Sunflower Remain Key Crops for Pesticide Planning

Forward prices for new-crop corn via the western border are already forming as a benchmark for the market. According to brokers, deals with deliveries in October-December were fixed at 192–194 €/t FCA Chop, and for January-June — 198–206 €/t FCA Chop.

For plant protection, this means corn producers will scrutinize the economics of each technological operation more carefully. Herbicide protection, weed control, fungicide, and insecticide solutions remain part of the production program, but procurement may be postponed closer to actual field needs.

A similar logic applies to sunflower. If logistics and storage of the harvest remain problematic, farms will try to avoid tying up excess funds in large warehouse stocks of pesticides.

Danube and Land Routes Influence Seasonal Purchasing

The record low water levels in the Danube complicate barge deliveries of grain to Romania. This increases the load on road and rail transport and may cause delays in supply chains.

It was also noted that railways, together with the Danube route, can provide only about a third of the capacity of Ukrainian Black Sea ports. Such a situation makes the agricultural market more sensitive to any disruptions in financing and logistics.

For pesticide suppliers, this is an argument to plan warehouse stocks in key agricultural regions in advance. For buyers, it is essential to verify actual availability of products, delivery timelines, and the possibility of quick substitution of active ingredients within the technology.

What Sellers and Buyers of Pesticides Should Focus on on AgroPost

  • Sellers: clearly specify product availability, packaging, warehouse location, and payment terms.
  • Buyers: compare not only prices but also delivery times, origin guarantees, and current registration status of the product.
  • Farms: separate procurement into essential items for basic protection and additional solutions depending on field monitoring.
  • Distributors: prepare offers for corn, sunflower, and grain crops considering possible demand shifts closer to the application season.

In current conditions, market participants who quickly confirm product availability, operate transparently, and help farmers maintain technological discipline without excessive cash flow burdens will have an advantage.

Implication for the market: the pesticide segment in Ukraine remains tied to the crop yield economy. Export logistical restrictions do not eliminate the need for herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides but change the procurement format: increased focus on price, availability, flexible payment options, and rapid regional delivery.
