Crop Protection Market in Ukraine: How Corn, Rapeseed, and Soy Influence Purchases

Prices for corn at Danube ports have declined, while domestic processing of rapeseed and soy has reached record levels. This signals to the crop protection market: buyers will scrutinize the cost-effectiveness of protection schemes, and sellers should tailor offers to specific crops, margins, and logistics.

Crop Protection Market in Ukraine: How Corn, Rapeseed, and Soy Influence Purchases

The Ukrainian crop protection market is entering a period where decisions regarding the purchase of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and seed treatments are increasingly influenced not only by agronomic factors but also by the economic viability of the crop.

Recent market signals for corn, rapeseed, and soybeans show a varied picture for producers: cereals are experiencing price and logistical pressures, while oilseeds are supported by domestic processing and external demand. This directly affects how farmers plan their budgets for crop protection products.

Corn: Protection will be evaluated based on profitability

On the export market, corn prices in Ukraine have decreased. As of September 17, purchase prices for new crop corn at Danube ports were mostly $165–170 per ton CPT port, which is $3–10 lower than at the end of the previous week.

Prices are pressured by the arrival of the new harvest, high transitional stocks estimated at around 5.5 million tons, complex export logistics, and the situation with minimal export prices. For producers, this means that expenses on technology, including crop protection, will be reviewed more critically.

In the crop protection segment for corn, buyers are likely to seek not the highest-cost schemes but a balanced set of products: weed control, seedling protection, field problem correction, and post-harvest work. For sellers on AgroPost, it is important to showcase not only the price per liter or kilogram but also the practical application rate per hectare and crop.

Rapeseed and soy: processing boosts focus on crop quality

The market environment for oilseeds looks different. In Ukraine, 42% of the rapeseed harvest has been processed, compared to 15% last year. Additionally, there is a reported 2.7-fold increase in rapeseed processing and a 2.5-fold rise in rapeseed oil exports compared to the previous marketing year.

For soybeans, the share of domestic processing increased from 39% to 54.2% in the 2025/26 marketing year. Meanwhile, soybean harvests decreased from 6.6 million tons to 4.8 million tons, but export revenue from soybean oil and meal grew by 12.3%, reaching $1.02 billion.

This creates a demand for stable quality and predictable technology in the crop protection market. Rapeseed and soybean producers will pay closer attention to seed treatments, herbicide protection, fungicide applications, and pest control, as these crops remain vital for processing and sales.

Global soy market: a signal for planning, but not for hasty decisions

On the global market, China has already purchased nearly 13 million tons of US soybeans for the current season, fulfilling over half of its annual obligation of 25 million tons. Last week, Chinese state traders contracted at least 1 million tons of US soybeans.

This increased purchasing activity supported futures prices: on September 14, soybean futures in Chicago rose by 1%. For Ukrainian farmers, this is not a direct instruction to increase crop protection expenditures but an important background for assessing soybean profitability and planning technology for the upcoming season.

What ZPR sellers and buyers should consider on AgroPost

  • For ZPR sellers, it is advisable to differentiate offers by crops: corn, rapeseed, soy, cereals. Universal listings are less aligned with current market logic.
  • For buyers, it is prudent to compare not only the price of the product but also the application rate, cost per hectare, timing, and compatibility with farm technology.
  • For corn, it is important to separately calculate the payback of herbicide and seed treatment protection, considering lower export prices.
  • For rapeseed and soy, early planning of protection measures is recommended, as domestic processing influences demand for high-quality raw materials.
  • Before purchasing, it is necessary to verify the registration of the product in Ukraine, the crop of application, active substance, packaging, batch, and supplier documents.

Implications for the market: The crop protection segment in Ukraine is shifting towards more precise planning. For crops under price pressure, farmers will seek economical and clear schemes, while for oilseeds, solutions that help maintain quality and marketability of the harvest will be prioritized. For AgroPost, this means an increased role for detailed listings linked to crop, application rate, and practical cost per hectare.
