Ukraine's Grain Logistics at the Start of the Season: Exports Surpass 2 Million Tons

The Ukrainian grain export season 2026/27 has begun with a high pace. As of July 22, the volume of grain and legume exports abroad reached nearly 2.1 million tons, which is twice as much as on the same date last season.

For farmers, traders, elevators, and carriers, this means a faster start to the logistics season. The demand for transportation is primarily centered around corn and wheat, which account for the main tonnage in the early weeks of the new marketing year.

Which crops drive the logistics load

The largest export volume at the start of the season is corn — 1.07 million tons. This is approximately twice as much as during the same period last season.

Wheat has been shipped at 834 thousand tons. According to available data, this is 2.3 times more than the same date last year.

Barley also shows growth: 182 thousand tons have been shipped to foreign markets, which is 48% more than a year earlier. As of the reporting date, no rye exports have been carried out.

What does this mean for transportation

The current export structure indicates a concentration of logistics around large grain batches. For truckers, rail operators, freight forwarders, and elevators, it is important to consider that corn and wheat remain key cargoes for route planning, scheduling, and storage capacity.

The faster pace of exports at the start of the season may increase competition for available transport resources in certain regions. At the same time, market participants should evaluate not only the total tonnage but also specific supply directions, elevator infrastructure availability, and loading conditions.

Flour exports still lag behind the overall export pace

Unlike grains, flour exports are lagging. As of July 22, shipments amounted to 1.2 thousand tons, which is 56% less than the same period last season.

For processors, this signals the need to pay closer attention to the logistics of small batches and sales channels. On the AgroPost marketplace, such positions require more precise descriptions of delivery conditions, packaging, minimum batch sizes, and shipment regions.

Key conclusions for AgroPost participants

  • Grain sellers should proactively confirm the availability of transport and elevator services, especially for corn and wheat.
  • Buyers should clarify not only the price but also the readiness of the batch for shipment, storage location, and possible delivery timelines.
  • Transporters should tailor their offers to mass grain cargoes, which currently form the main export flow.
  • Elevators and freight forwarders need to communicate available capacities, reception schedules, and the ability to quickly process batches.

Implications for the market: The start of the 2026/27 marketing year shows more active movement of grain cargoes compared to last season. For agribusiness, the main task is not only selling the harvest but also timely booking of logistics — from transportation to loading and export documentation.
