Ukrainian Fertilizer Market: Pre-Planting Purchases Depend on Liquidity and Grain Revenue

The Ukrainian fertilizer market is entering an active demand period without public signals of sharp price changes in available sources. Key factors for sellers and buyers are farm liquidity: autumn field works require significant working capital, while grain prices provide only partial support.

Ukrainian Fertilizer Market: Pre-Planting Purchases Depend on Liquidity and Grain Revenue

The fertilizer market in Ukraine should now be assessed not only through prices for nitrogen or NPK, but also through farmers' access to working capital. For buyers, important factors include deferred payments, fast logistics, and the ability to purchase in batches, while for sellers — the quality of the client's payment discipline.

According to market reports, the agro sector needs approximately 70 billion UAH for winter crops planting, and the total working capital requirement for main autumn field operations is estimated at around 200 billion UAH. This creates a cautious procurement model: farms may hesitate to purchase large volumes if they lack guaranteed financing or predictable revenue.

What Drives Fertilizer Demand

Demand in the fertilizer category is traditionally linked to sowing structure, technological plans, and application timing. For the autumn campaign, the most sensitive positions remain those related to primary nutrition and starter application, including NPK complexes and nitrogen products for planned technologies.

At the same time, today’s buyers more often consider not only the price per ton but the total purchase cost: delivery, payment terms, minimum order quantity, documentation availability, and actual shipment timelines. For AgroPost, this means that listings with clearly specified conditions have better chances of quickly finding a buyer.

Financing Becomes a Key Constraint

The need for tens of billions of hryvnias for planting highlights the main seasonal risk: even if products are available on the market, farmers may postpone some purchases or split orders. This is especially relevant for medium and small farms, which depend on grain sales, credit lines, or deferred payments from suppliers.

For fertilizer sellers, a practical solution could be flexible commercial offers: separate pricing for self-pickup, delivery calculations, short-term batch fixation, and transparent prepayment or postpayment conditions. Such details reduce unnecessary negotiations and help convert ad views into deals more quickly.

Grain Market Sends Mixed Signals to Buyers

Market reviews indicate that last week, wheat prices at Ukrainian ports increased by 3–5 USD/ton, while the domestic market remained largely unchanged. Demand prices for 2nd class wheat ranged between 6,500–7,800 UAH/ton FOB, and for feed wheat — 5,000–7,500 UAH/ton FOB.

For fertilizers, this does not automatically mean increased procurement, but it provides an indicator of grain farmers’ liquidity. If farmers can sell grain at acceptable prices, they may be more active in fulfilling their agrochemical needs. Conversely, if sales are postponed, fertilizer demand may remain spotty and in smaller batches.

What to Include in AgroPost Listings

  • Type of fertilizer: nitrogen, complex NPK, microfertilizer, or other group.
  • Formula or composition: exact content of active substances, if confirmed by documents.
  • Packaging and minimum batch: big bag, bag, liquid, shipment tonnage.
  • Location: region, warehouse, or self-pickup conditions.
  • Logistics: delivery options, estimated timelines, who bears transportation costs.
  • Payment: prepayment, cashless settlement, deferred payment options.
  • Documents: quality certificates, origin documents, invoices, and other confirmations.

Buyers should compare not only prices but also the supplier’s ability to confirm quality, deliver promptly, and agree on conditions. During peak demand season, a few days’ difference in delivery time can be more critical than a small price variation.

Key Conclusions for Sellers and Buyers

  • Demand for fertilizers before planting remains dependent on farmers’ access to working capital.
  • Farms may purchase more in batches rather than fulfilling all needs with a single contract.
  • For sellers, it is important to present a comprehensive commercial offer, not just the price per ton.
  • For buyers, verifying documentation, actual product availability, and delivery conditions are critical.

Implication for the market: in the near future, competition in the fertilizer segment will be driven not only by price but also by financial terms, logistics, and supplier trust. On AgroPost, ads that clearly show warehouse, batch, region, documents, and payment procedures will have an advantage.
