Ukrainian Fertilizer Market: What to Consider Before Autumn Planting

The Ukrainian fertilizer market is entering an active planning period ahead of the autumn sowing. Following the harvesting of early grains and oilseeds, farms assess actual yields, financial resources, and the need to replenish nutrients.

For AgroPost sellers, this means that demand will focus not only on price but also on availability, quick logistics, clear packaging, and the ability to select products tailored to specific crops and regions.

Yield determines the need for fertilization

According to Volyn-Zerno-Produkt (VILIA), this season early grains and oilseeds were harvested from 19.2 thousand hectares. Winter rapeseed was harvested from 9.4 thousand hectares, yielding 36.6 thousand tons with an average yield of 3.9 t/ha. Winter wheat was harvested from 9.8 thousand hectares, with a total yield of 66.7 thousand tons and an average yield of 6.8 t/ha.

Within individual farms, results varied by natural zones. In the Forest-Steppe, rapeseed and wheat yields were higher than in Polissya. For the fertilizer market, this is an important signal: the need for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and microelements increasingly depends on local technology, soil type, and actual nutrient removal by the crop.

Buyers should not automatically transfer last year's fertilization scheme. After high-yielding plots, it is advisable to review the nutrient balance, and after weaker areas, to separately evaluate whether the issue was related to fertilization, moisture, sowing timing, or weather stresses.

Nitrogen and NPK remain central to planning

For winter crops, farmers traditionally focus on complex NPK solutions for starter fertilization and nitrogen fertilizers for subsequent top dressing. At the same time, under current conditions, it is important to consider not only the price per ton but also the active substance content, delivery conditions, and compatibility with application technology.

For fertilizer sellers on AgroPost, a practical advantage is to clearly specify the formula, granulation, packaging, available volume, shipment region, and minimum order quantity. This reduces negotiation time and helps buyers compare offers more efficiently.

  • For buyers: it is advisable to pre-segment needs into starter application, main application, and reserve for spring fertilization.
  • For sellers: stock levels and actual delivery times can be just as important as discounts.
  • For both parties: it is recommended to document quality parameters and product documentation before payment.

Grain logistics influences cautious purchasing

The grain segment remains at risk of changing trade flows due to uncertainties in the operation of Black Sea ports. According to ASAP Agri scenarios, prolonged blockage of deepwater ports could reduce Ukrainian wheat exports in the 2026/27 marketing year to 5–10 million tons.

For the fertilizer market, this is not a direct price indicator but an important factor for financial planning. If grain sales are delayed or logistics costs increase, some farms may shift fertilizer purchases in time, buy smaller batches, or actively seek local offers.

Therefore, marketplace listings should emphasize conditions that help farmers manage cash flow: availability of small batches, self-pickup options, quick confirmation of stock, and transparent delivery prices.

Key conclusions for AgroPost

  • Demand for fertilizers before autumn sowing will be linked to harvest results and plans for winter crops.
  • Regional differences in yields enhance interest in more precise fertilization schemes.
  • Nitrogen and complex NPK fertilizers remain fundamental for seasonal planning.
  • Logistical uncertainties in grain may make buyers more cautious about large one-time purchases.
  • Sellers should update listings with actual stock, formulas, and delivery conditions.

What this means for the market: the immediate demand for fertilizers in Ukraine will be shaped by practical sowing needs rather than just general expectations. Sellers who quickly confirm availability and provide clear product parameters will have an advantage, while buyers will benefit from early needs assessment and full-cost comparison of proposals.
