Crop Protection Products in Ukraine: Demand During Harvest and Start of Melon Season

The beginning of harvest in Prykarpattia and the arrival of the first local watermelons from Odesa indicate a shift towards more selective plant protection measures: less bulk procurement for storage and more focus on specific crops, timing, and quality.

Crop Protection Products in Ukraine: Demand During Harvest and Start of Melon Season

In early July, Ukraine’s agricultural season enters a new phase: some farms are already harvesting early grains, legumes, and rapeseed, while the first local melons appear in the south. For the plant protection products market, this means a change in demand structure: from mass spring treatments to targeted solutions for specific crops and harvest timelines.

For sellers and buyers on AgroPost, it is now crucial not just to have products available, but to clearly specify the crop, active ingredient, application regulations, and waiting periods. During harvest, these parameters directly influence the ability to sell products safely.

Early grains and rapeseed: shifting focus from treatments to yield quality

Harvesting of early grains, legumes, and rapeseed has already begun in Ivano-Frankivsk region. The first to start were farms in Ivano-Frankivsk and Kolomyia districts.

As of July 2, 2023, 500 hectares of winter barley and 100 hectares of peas have been threshed in the region. Rape harvesting has also commenced: on 500 hectares, 1,430 tons have been harvested so far.

For the crop protection segment, this signals that the active treatment window for early crops is closing. Demand in such farms may shift toward related activities: post-harvest field preparation, weed control, planning for winter crop protection, and procurement for the next cycle.

Melons in the south: priority — safe sale of fresh produce

The Odesa region has started selling the first local watermelons. Reports indicate that the early harvest was grown under mulch film. Watermelons are now available in the market.

For melon producers, especially during market entry, application regulations for products are critical. Buyers and trading partners pay attention not only to appearance and taste but also to compliance with safety standards.

For sellers of crop protection products in this segment, it is important to provide accurate descriptions: which crops are permitted for use, target pests or diseases, and any restrictions regarding pre-harvest intervals. Buyers should check labels, registration, and application recommendations before each purchase.

What crop protection market participants should consider

  • Avoid offering universal solutions where regulations are required. During harvest, crop type, growth stage, and waiting periods are more important than general efficacy claims.
  • Highlight offers for grains, rapeseed, vegetables, and melons separately. Buyers find the right products faster if listings are structured by crop and purpose.
  • Clarify stock availability and delivery timelines. For farms operating within a short seasonal window, product availability can be critical.
  • Do not ignore post-harvest periods. After early crop harvests, demand may focus on field preparation for subsequent sowings and weed control.

How to create effective listings on AgroPost for faster discovery

For the “Plant Protection” category, the best ads clearly state from the first line what is being sold: herbicide, fungicide, insecticide, seed treatment, or other product. The crop or main purpose should be indicated in the title, if it does not contradict the product instructions.

In the ad text, it is advisable to specify the form of the product, packaging, active ingredient, availability of documents, region of shipment, and delivery conditions. This reduces verification time for buyers and minimizes irrelevant inquiries for sellers.

Implication for the market: The crop protection season in Ukraine does not end with the start of harvest but becomes more precise and demanding. Sellers should shift from broad seasonal offers to specific product listings for particular crops, while buyers should carefully verify application regulations against actual production stages and harvest timelines.
