Grain Ports Support Wheat Prices: Logistics Considerations This Week

The Ukrainian grain market has entered the week with a more pronounced focus on port-related transactions. According to industry analysts, last week wheat prices in Ukrainian ports rose by $3–5/tonne, while no significant changes were observed in the domestic market.

For agribusinesses, this primarily serves as a logistical signal: the difference between local prices and CPT port prices again requires precise calculation of transportation costs, timing of dispatches, and batch quality.

Wheat: Port Basis Becomes More Active

At ports, prices for food-grade wheat ranged from $168 to $179/tonne CPT port. For feed wheat, the range was reported as $150–$160/tonne CPT port.

On the domestic market, demand prices for Grade 2 wheat ranged from 6,500 to 7,800 UAH/tonne CPT, while for feed wheat, prices were between 5,000 and 7,500 UAH/tonne CPT. The highest values were mostly recorded in the southern regions of Ukraine.

Analysts noted that millers were not rushing to build large inventories, while trader demand slightly increased. The supply of wheat from farmers remained sufficient, predominantly of feed quality.

Barley: Stability Without Sharp Logistics Signals

In the feed barley market, prices remained stable. Buyers mostly covered their needs with small batches, without aggressive accumulation of volumes.

Demand prices for feed barley ranged from 5,500 to 6,700 UAH/tonne CPT. In ports, the range stayed within $140–$155/tonne CPT port.

For logistics, this indicates less pressure on urgent transportation compared to wheat. At the same time, sellers should compare port prices with transportation costs, especially if the batch is small or located far from main export routes.

What to Check Before Making a Deal

  • Delivery basis. Compare CPT prices on domestic routes and CPT port prices not only by cost but also by actual transportation expenses.
  • Grain quality. The difference between food-grade and feed wheat affects the circle of buyers and final margins.
  • Batch size. For small volumes, a stable port price does not always cover logistics costs.
  • Shipment schedule. With increased trader activity, it is important to coordinate transportation, documentation, and acceptance before finalizing terms.

Practical Guidance for Sellers and Carriers from AgroPost

Wheat sellers should update their offers with clear indications of basis, class, volume, and shipment region. This simplifies comparison between local sales and port deliveries.

Carriers should monitor demand in southern directions, as higher prices were recorded there. Meanwhile, for barley, the market appears more balanced, so rates and transport availability could be decisive for the profitability of deals.

What this means for the market: The port premium on wheat makes logistics a key profitability factor. Those who quickly calculate the full delivery cost and properly formalize their proposals will have better chances to lock in favorable prices without unnecessary route losses.
