Ukrainian Fertilizer Market: Demand for Nitrogen and NPK Depends on Field Access and Planting Preparation

The Ukrainian fertilizer market remains pragmatic and targeted: farmers plan purchases based on specific fields, crops, and application timing. Slow demining of agricultural lands limits rapid return to production, while experimental crops have yet to generate significant fertilizer demand.

Ukrainian Fertilizer Market: Demand for Nitrogen and NPK Depends on Field Access and Planting Preparation

The fertilizer market in Ukraine is entering a period where buyers are increasingly scrutinizing not only the price per ton but also the actual need for specific fields. For nitrogen fertilizers, NPK, and related agrochemicals, this means: generic offers are less effective than clearly defined batches linked to crop type, region, and delivery schedules.

Access to land, crop structure, and farmers’ willingness to finance crop nutrition remain key demand factors. At the same time, publicly available data do not allow for precise conclusions regarding current fertilizer prices or sales volume changes, so this digest focuses on practical market signals for sellers and buyers.

Demand for fertilizers is becoming more targeted

For farmers, the main issue is not just purchasing fertilizer but timely meeting the needs of specific technology. Nitrogen products remain fundamental for fertilization, while NPK is often considered in connection with initial feeding, autumn preparation, or crops with higher element balance requirements.

On the AgroPost marketplace, sellers should emphasize clear parameters: formula, form of release, packaging, minimum order, shipment region, quality documents, and delivery conditions. For buyers, these details are often more important than the overall product name.

It is also advisable to differentiate offers for large farms and smallholders. The former more often seek consignments with predictable logistics, while the latter require flexible packaging, quick dispatch, and the ability to purchase volumes tailored to specific areas.

Land demining: why it matters for fertilizer sellers

The slow return of some agricultural lands to safe cultivation directly affects the potential demand for seeds, pesticides, and fertilizers. According to publicly available data, by late spring 2026, only 5 humanitarian demining agreements covering 0.6 thousand hectares with a total value of 38.4 million UAH had been completed.

The number of orders within the program in April and May remained at 125 agreements for demining 24.9 thousand hectares with a total value of 1.573 billion UAH. It was also reported that in May, work was ongoing under 27 contracts covering 8.7 thousand hectares, and the Humanitarian Demining Center announced 37 auctions for 6.5 thousand hectares with a potential value exceeding 760 million UAH.

For the fertilizer market, this means that demand in frontline and potentially hazardous regions may remain uneven. Sellers should not automatically assume rapid recovery of procurement across all land areas formally classified as agricultural land.

Buyers in such regions should plan purchases after confirming safe access to fields, actual crop structure, and timing of work. This helps avoid funds being frozen in fertilizers that cannot be applied within the optimal technological window.

Experimental crops do not generate mass fertilizer demand

Some niche crops currently do not alter the structure of the fertilizer market. For example, as of June 1, 2026, cotton cultivation in Ukraine covered only 3.3 hectares and was at the experimental stage. These were located in Mykolaiv, Odesa, and Kyiv regions.

In comparison, in 2025, the cotton area was 5 hectares. Despite a budget subsidy of 10,000 UAH per hectare, these areas are not yet industrial and do not form a significant separate segment of demand for NPK or specialized feeding schemes.

Therefore, fertilizer sellers should maintain their primary focus on traditional field crops and the actual areas of their customers. Niche crops can serve as a basis for consultative proposals but should not lead to overestimating the overall market capacity.

What to consider on AgroPost

  • For nitrogen fertilizer sellers: specify the exact product form, batch availability, storage region, and possible shipment dates.
  • For NPK sellers: include the fertilizer formula in the ad title so buyers immediately see the nutrient ratio.
  • For buyers: compare not only prices but also quality documents, packaging, logistics, and whether the fertilizer matches your technology.
  • For farms in risky regions: coordinate purchases with actual field access and work plans, especially if areas require inspection or demining.

What this means for the market: in the near future, fertilizer demand in Ukraine will be less mass-oriented and more targeted and technologically justified. Sellers who provide transparent information about products and logistics, and buyers who plan purchases based on actual crop structures rather than general market expectations, will benefit.
