Two fires involving corn broke out at grain dryers in the Zhytomyr region on November 5. For grain market participants, the incidents are a reason to check how well drying, storage and subsequent shipment arrangements are coordinated.
There have been no reports of any impact on transportation or rates. Specialists are investigating the causes of the fires.
What is known about the incidents
The first fire broke out in the village of Parypsy, Zhytomyr district. According to the State Emergency Service, the fire destroyed 3 tonnes of corn, while another 17 tonnes were saved. To unload the grain, rescuers cut an opening in the metal grain dryer.
The second fire occurred in the village of Kodnia. It was extinguished by rescuers together with the company’s employees. The report did not specify how much grain was affected.
What to check before shipment
Corn sellers should agree in advance with the grain dryer on when the lot will be accepted and processed. If the shipment plan depends on a single facility, it is advisable to check whether alternative capacity is available and what steps to take in the event of downtime.
Buyers and carriers should confirm the lot’s readiness and its scheduled delivery for shipment directly with their counterparty. This helps avoid planning transportation around unconfirmed timelines.
What this means for the market
Two separate incidents are not enough to assess their impact on transportation volumes or corn prices. However, they underscore the practical need for sellers, buyers and logistics partners to coordinate drying, storage and shipment schedules in advance.
