Ukrainian grain logistics is once again focusing on the Danube route and the Romanian port of Constanța. For wheat sellers, this means not only increased interest in export basises but also a greater dependence of prices on transportation availability, queues, and downtime costs.

According to market data, as of August 27, purchase prices for Ukrainian food wheat of grade 2 on DAP Constanța basis generally ranged from $250 to $255 per ton, and grade 3 — from $245 to $250 per ton. This is $7–$10 higher than at the end of the previous week.

Why Constanța Received a Price Premium

Price support was driven by a combination of external demand and logistical shortages. After the EU duty-free quotas for Ukrainian wheat were exhausted, purchases at the western land border effectively slowed down, and some flows redirected to Danube ports and the Constanța route.

Constanța remains an important hub for forming and dispatching large-volume shipments. Therefore, buyers are willing to include higher transportation costs in the price if the product can be delivered to the export hub within acceptable timeframes.

An additional factor is grain quality. Amid a shortage of high-quality food wheat, importers are more actively competing for batches that meet contractual requirements.

The Danube logistics remain congested. Market reports mention queues of over 50 ships near the Sulina Canal, as well as increased costs due to delays.
