Ukrainian Fertilizer Market: Demand Depends on Credit, Grain Liquidity, and Logistics

For fertilizer sellers and buyers, key factors are not only nitrogen or NPK prices but also the availability of working capital. Agricultural credit supports procurement, but weak grain market liquidity prompts farms to plan fertilization more cautiously and delay some deals.

Ukrainian Fertilizer Market: Demand Depends on Credit, Grain Liquidity, and Logistics

The Ukrainian fertilizer market is entering a period where purchasing decisions increasingly depend on farms' financial discipline. For farmers, it is crucial not just to find ammonium nitrate, urea, or NPK, but to understand when funds will be available for payment and how quickly suppliers can meet planting needs.

Several factors influence demand: access to bank financing, cautious sales of new crop grain, and instability in export logistics. This creates a market where buyers negotiate under conditions, and sellers must compete not only on price but also on delivery flexibility.

Credit supports agricultural procurement

In Ivano-Frankivsk region, farmers have attracted 1.016 billion UAH in bank loans since the beginning of 2026 to develop production. A total of 168 agricultural producers received financing.

Some farms utilized the "Affordable Credit 5–7–9%" program: 99 agricultural enterprises secured 527.5 million UAH through it. Of this amount, 212.6 million UAH was provided using the portfolio state guarantee mechanism.

This is an important signal for the fertilizer market: buyers with access to credit lines can reserve volumes earlier and avoid peak purchasing periods. At the same time, specific conditions for using credit for fertilizer payments depend on the bank, the program, and the targeted purpose of funding.

Grain liquidity restrains quick fertilizer deals

Physical activity in the grain market remains limited. Due to complications in port operations, trading of corn and wheat has shifted to alternative routes, but the number of new contracts remains low.

According to market indicators, over the week, prices for corn and wheat at port basis decreased: CPT Odessa corn — up to $200/ton, food wheat — up to $198/ton, feed wheat — up to $188/ton. At the western border, the FCA Chop index for corn adjusted to $228/ton.

This means farms face more complex budgeting. If grain is not sold or sold more slowly, fertilizer procurement may shift from a "cover all needs immediately" approach to a phased batch approach.

What nitrogen and complex fertilizer buyers should consider

Buyers should differentiate between critical and deferred needs. Critical needs are fertilizers essential to meet technological schedules on time. Deferred needs may depend on grain sales, access to credit, or logistics changes.

  • Specify not only the price but also the delivery deadline. Even a favorable offer loses its relevance if the fertilizer does not arrive before application.
  • Compare offers based on delivery basis. Self-pickup, delivery to the farm, or warehouse dispatch can significantly alter the final cost.
  • Verify documents and product origin. For nitrogen, NPK, and liquid fertilizers, this concerns quality, safety, and expected field results.
  • Plan payments in advance. If procurement depends on credit or grain sales, it is better to agree on limits before peak demand.

What sellers should do on AgroPost

Fertilizer suppliers should adapt their listings to cautious demand. Buyers look not only for the lowest price but also for clear offers: availability, packaging or tonnage, shipment region, delivery options, and quick deal confirmation.

For nitrogen fertilizers, it is advisable to specify the product form and storage conditions separately. For NPK — the formula, granulation, minimum batch size, and quality documents. The less uncertainty in the listing, the higher the likelihood of contact with the buyer.

In current conditions, proposals with flexible batch sizes may work better: some farms are not ready to buy the full volume immediately but can meet needs in stages for specific technological operations.

Implications for the market: demand for fertilizers in Ukraine remains linked to financing and grain sales. Credit programs support farmers’ purchasing capacity, but unstable logistics and weaker grain market liquidity make deals more cautious. For buyers, planning and supplier verification are key; for sellers, transparent conditions, product availability, and prompt communication are essential.
