Ukraine Grain Market: UZ Export Logistics in August

In Ukraine's grain market, August began with a sharp slowdown in railway exports. In the first 11 days of the month, PJSC "Ukrzaliznytsia" shipped 201.7 thousand tons of grain for export.

According to data presented during an online meeting with market participants on August 13, this is 72% less than the July level and 76% lower than the same period in 2025. The main concern for market players now is not only the grain price but also route availability and predictability of shipments.

Railway exports have sharply decreased

The total grain transportation volume by Ukrzaliznytsia in the first 11 days of August amounted to 435.8 thousand tons. This is 47% less than in July and 52% lower compared to the same period last year.

The average daily grain load in August is 31.3 thousand tons. For comparison: this is 38% less than in July and 49% less than in August 2025.

At the same time, Ukrzaliznytsia reports some activity in recent days: one of the latest days saw 50 thousand tons of grain loaded, and the day before — 46 thousand tons. However, these volumes are still below the typical peak season, when daily loads reached 80–100 thousand tons.

Routes are shifting away from Greater Odessa

The most noticeable change is the sharp reduction in flow to the ports of Greater Odessa. In the first 11 days of August, 75.2 thousand tons of grain were transported there by rail, nearly 89% less than in July.

Ukrzaliznytsia attributes the low transportation volumes to the blockade of the Greater Odessa ports, through which about 90% of grain exports previously passed.

Against this backdrop, the importance of alternative routes has increased. To western border crossings, 126 thousand tons of grain were transported by rail in 11 days of August. This is 81%, or 56 thousand tons, more than the previous month.

Particularly notable is Izmail: 91.1 thousand tons of grain were shipped in this direction, which is 11.5 times more than in all of July.

What sellers and buyers of grain should consider

For grain sellers, the main practical takeaway is that logistics conditions should be monitored as carefully as the price. When listing offers on AgroPost, it is advisable to specify the delivery basis, available elevator facilities, options for auto or rail dispatch, and estimated readiness timelines for the batch.

Buyers should verify not only the volume availability but also the actual feasibility of transportation. If the contract is tied to an export route, it is necessary to agree on backup options in advance: western border, Danube route, or temporary storage at the elevator.
