The Ukrainian grain market is entering a period of increased supply of new crop corn with notable logistical risks. For sellers, this means a more complex choice between quick sale, storage at the elevator, and finding a route that does not "eat" into margins.
The most sensitive point remains the Danube direction. It is there that corn prices have already declined, and railway deliveries may be delayed due to infrastructure damage in Odesa region.
What is happening with corn prices
As of September 17, purchase prices for new crop corn in Danube ports mostly ranged from $165–170/ton on CPT-port terms. Since the beginning of the week, prices have decreased by $3–10/ton.
The market is under pressure from the appearance of the new crop and the presence of transitional stocks of corn amounting to about 5.5 million tons. Buyers are acting cautiously, expecting further price declines.
An additional factor for traders is minimal export prices. For supplies on CPT terms, they reportedly can reach $195/ton, which is higher than current purchase levels in Danube ports and complicates export transactions.
The Danube route has received new load
"Ukrzaliznytsia" reported that due to bridge damage in Odesa region, grain delivery to Danube ports has become more difficult. The company did not specify the date of damage or the extent of destruction.
According to the carrier, approximately 3,000 wagons with grain are heading towards Danube ports for further export. Without using the damaged bridge, it may take up to 26 days for them to reach the ports.
An alternative route is possible through Moldova, but transit capacities there are limited. This is important for sellers planning contracts with strict delivery deadlines.
Exports: where volumes are moving
Since the beginning of the month, 118,000 tons of grain have been transported towards Danube ports. Through land border crossings with Eastern European countries, another 346.2 thousand tons have been exported.
For the market, this means that land routes remain operational, but they do not fully relieve the Danube direction. Cost and predictability of logistics remain key conditions of agreements.
Key conclusions for sellers and buyers
- Corn sellers should compare not only the CPT port price but also the actual delivery time and risk of delays.
- Elevators need to prepare for short-term storage requests if producers delay sales due to weak prices.
- Buyers should clarify the origin of the batch, route, and realistic shipment schedule before fixing the price.
- Traders need to consider the gap between market purchase prices and minimum export benchmarks.
What this means for the market
In the near future, the Ukrainian grain market will remain influenced by two factors: the supply of new crop corn and limited export logistics. For AgroPost participants, this is a reason to carefully specify delivery basis, shipment deadlines, and storage conditions, as the difference between "goods are available" and "goods will arrive on time to the port" now directly affects the final transaction price.
